Road Safety For Sporting Events Sitemap
Cycling Racing Events

Cycle races and other road based cycle events form a large majority of the events we cover.

Last season we covered in excess of 40 cycling events and are pleased to report that these events went with out serious incident.

We welcome contact from any race organisers or individuals who would like more information on the services that we can provide. We'll be glad to discuss any requirements you may have for event safety support and detail how we might assist you in insuring your event takes place without incident. A Typical Cycle Race

What follows is a typical service provided by NEG Wales for a cycle race which is carried out on public roads:

  1. The event organiser will carry out a risk assessment of a proposed course.
  2. Following approval of the course the event organiser will contact NEG Wales, indicating how many motorcycle safety officers (MSO's) and how many static safety officers (SSO's) will be required for the event. NEG Wales will then prepare a quotation for the cost of cover.
  3. Upon approval of the quotation a senior member of NEG Wales will be selected as an event team leader and a selection of available NEG Wales members will be made to make up the team for the event. First and second reserves will also be selected. Route and race materials will be circulated amongst the team for consideration prior to the event.
  4. On the day of the event the appointed NEG Wales team will meet before the event start for a pre-race briefing, the MSO's will commence a ride around the route to ascertain any potential hazards that may have occurred since the risk assessment was undertaken.
  5. The event commences with NEG Wales operating under the direction of the appointed team leader - the team leader is always in radio communication with the NEG Wales team and the chief commissaries.
  6. During the event SSO's will man junctions, roundabouts and other hazards ensuring road users are aware of the on-coming race. MSO's will travel with the race ensuring competitors are protected from both on-coming and overtaking traffic. Where necessary MSO's will ensure side access roads, roundabouts and other hazards are carefully monitored to prevent traffic from unexpectedly pulling out.
  7. Where necessary safety advice will be given by an MSO to a competitor(s) who is not adhering to safety guidelines and potentially reported to the chief commissaire who will decide if any action needs to be taken.
  8. On completion of the event a team debrief is held with all member of the NEG Wales team, chief commisaire and race organisers in attendance.
